Bonnie Orcutt lived in Newberry Springs, California. Her house used to be connected to Rt. 66 with her driveway extending to the road. Mrs. Orcutt was just another resident in Newberry Springs until the surveyors came to lay the foundation for Interstate 40. Effective when the government officially built Interstate 40, Mrs. Orcutt's access to Route 66 was cut off. Mrs. Orcutt decided she wouldn't go down without a fight and decided to lobby to save her access to the nearest highway. After exchanging correspondences with the government, the government came out and built Mrs. Orcutt a four mile stretch of road connecting her house to exit 23 and Newberry Springs. Today, Mrs. Orcutt's driveway is still intact and her house is mostly still standing. She died in 1987. Mrs. Orcutt's driveway now named Memorial Drive also has a place in speed test history: Car and Driver in the 1970s tested car speeds and one of the cars hit 200 mph on the road. Now it is advised to not speed test on the road as it has been unmaintained for a while. Below are the photos I had taken while at Mrs. Orcutt's Property. I also posted a video on my Youtube Channel of the home and the road.
